Legacy Strategic Agenda

The Legacy Strategic Agenda Collaborative was a partnership between the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums (MALHM) and the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS), inspiring LSA action and driving momentum.

The LSA Collaborative guided the work of three priority action teams. Meeting quarterly across the state, Collaborative members represented libraries, academia, diverse communities, and local history organizations.

The goals in the Legacy Strategic Agenda built on success realized during the first five years of Legacy funding. The LSA’s strategic priorities focused on:

  • History Education
  • Legacy Grants
  • Unfamiliar Stories
  • Partnerships

In 2017, priority action teams assessed strengths and challenges across the first three priorities. All teams integrated partnership strategies. We sought creative solutions to transform history in communities across Minnesota.

Education

Local historical societies are ideal resources for outstate school districts working to meet state social studies standards. The education action team surveyed local educators and administrators, assessing barriers and opportunities in connecting school districts with local historical societies.

Unfamiliar Stories

There’s a gap between those whose histories and narratives are not in the mainstream — those with unfamiliar stories — and the resources available in history communities. The unfamiliar stories action team identified places and people where these stories exist and shared this knowledge with the wider history community. The team also explored the wants and needs of communities.

Legacy Grants

How can the MNHS Legacy grant programs have continued transparency, operational excellence, and enduring value? The grants action team assessed and acted on possibilities related to Legacy grant programs.
